How to Swap Your iPhone in Nigeria: Trade-In Values, Steps and Mistakes to Avoid

Swapping, also called trading in, is the cheapest way to upgrade an iPhone in Nigeria. Instead of selling your old phone to a stranger and then hunting for a new one, the store values your phone and takes it off the price of the new one. You pay only the difference.

What decides your iPhone's swap value?

Two phones of the same model can get very different offers. Here is what a good swap desk checks:

• Model and storage. Newer models and higher storage hold value best. Pro and Pro Max models usually keep more of their value than the base models.
• Battery health. Phones above 85% get the best offers. Below 80% usually means the battery needs replacing, and that cost comes off your value.
• Screen and body. Cracks on the screen or back glass, dents on the frame and deep scratches all reduce the offer.
• Original parts. A non-genuine screen or battery, shown as "Unknown Part" in Settings, lowers the value significantly.
• Face ID or Touch ID. A phone with broken Face ID is worth far less, because the repair is difficult.
• iCloud status. A phone that is still iCloud locked cannot be accepted at all.
• Box and accessories. These help a little, but they matter less than battery and condition.

How to prepare your iPhone before a swap

1. Back up. Use iCloud Backup or a computer. Back up WhatsApp separately from WhatsApp › Settings › Chats › Chat Backup.
2. Transfer eSIM or take out your SIM. If you use eSIM, contact your network before erasing the phone.
3. Sign out of your Apple Account. Go to Settings › [your name] › Sign Out. This turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
4. Unpair your Apple Watch if you have one, so it backs up to the phone first.
5. Erase the phone. Go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Erase All Content and Settings. You can also do this at the store in front of our staff.

Mistakes that cost you money

• Not knowing your battery health. Check it first so you know what to expect.
• Forgetting to sign out of iCloud. The swap cannot go ahead until you do.
• Swapping with strangers on social media. You risk receiving a stolen or iCloud-locked phone. Always swap with a business that has a physical address and gives a receipt and warranty.
• Waiting too long. Trade-in values fall when a new series launches. If you plan to upgrade, swapping earlier usually gets you more.
