How to Check if a UK-Used iPhone Is Original Before You Pay: 12-Point Checklist

Checking a UK-used iPhone before purchase

Quick answer

To check that a UK-used iPhone is original, dial *#06# and make sure the IMEI matches Settings and the box. Then enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com. Next, open Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History to spot replaced parts, and check that battery health is 80% or higher. Finally, confirm the phone is signed out of iCloud before you pay.

"UK-used" is one of the most searched phrases among Nigerian iPhone buyers, and also one of the most abused. A good UK-used iPhone can save you hundreds of thousands of naira. A bad one can have a fake screen, a weak battery or an iCloud lock that turns it into a paperweight.

Use this checklist on any used iPhone, whether you buy from us or anyone else. It takes about ten minutes and needs nothing but the phone and a SIM card.

What does "UK-used" actually mean?

A UK-used iPhone was first sold and used in the United Kingdom, then traded in or resold and imported to Nigeria. UK phones are popular because they are usually well cared for and come in the same models Apple sells worldwide. "UK-used" says nothing about quality, though. Grade, battery health and parts history decide that.

The 12-point UK-used iPhone checklist

Identity checks

  1. Match the IMEI three ways. Dial *#06#. The IMEI shown must match the one in Settings › General › About and, if there is a box, the label on the box. A mismatch is a red flag.
  2. Check Apple's coverage site. Enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com. It should show the exact model you are paying for, and confirm the phone is genuine.
  3. Read the model number. In Settings › General › About, tap the model number until it starts with a letter. M means a phone first sold new, F means refurbished by Apple, N means a replacement unit and P means a personalised (engraved) unit. All are genuine.

Hardware checks

  1. Open Parts and Service History. On iOS 15.2 or later, Settings › General › About shows whether the battery, screen or camera has been replaced. "Unknown Part" means a non-genuine replacement.
  2. Check battery health. Go to Settings › Battery › Battery Health. Below 80%, Apple considers the battery worn. At IVOLTE we only sell UK-used phones at 85% or higher.
  3. Test Face ID or Touch ID. Set it up from scratch. If Face ID is "unavailable", the phone has been opened or damaged, and repairing it is expensive.
  4. Check True Tone. Open Control Centre, press and hold the brightness slider, and look for the True Tone button. If it is missing, the screen may not be original.
  5. Test every camera and the flash. Switch between all lenses, record a short video and check for dust spots or a camera that will not focus.
  6. Test speakers, microphones and charging. Make a call, record a voice note and plug in a charger. On USB-C models, check the port is not loose.

Lock checks

  1. Confirm iCloud is signed out. The top of Settings must not show anyone's name, and Find My must be off. A phone still tied to someone else's Apple Account can be locked remotely.
  2. Insert your own SIM. Try an MTN or Airtel SIM and make a call. A network-locked UK phone will show "SIM not supported".
  3. Erase and reactivate. Ask the seller to erase the phone in front of you (Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone). If it reactivates without asking for an Apple Account password, you are safe.

Red flags that should end the deal

  • A price far below what reputable stores charge. Compare against our live iPhone price list.
  • The seller will not let you test the phone, or says the phone "cannot be erased".
  • An "Unknown Part" warning on the screen or battery.
  • No receipt and no warranty, not even a few days.

Grade A, B and C: what you are really paying for

Grading is not standardised, but in general Grade A phones look almost new with no visible scratches, Grade B have light marks, and Grade C have obvious wear. Grade does not describe the battery or internal parts, so still run the checklist above.

How IVOLTE inspects every UK-used iPhone

Frequently asked questions

How can I know if an iPhone is original?

Dial *#06# and confirm the IMEI matches Settings and the box, then enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com. A genuine iPhone shows the correct model on Apple’s site.

What battery health is good for a UK-used iPhone?

Look for 85% or higher. Below 80%, Apple considers the battery worn, and you will notice shorter battery life and possible slowdowns.

How do I know if an iPhone is iCloud locked?

Open Settings. If someone’s name appears at the top or Find My is on, the phone is still linked to their Apple Account. Ask for it to be erased in front of you and confirm it reactivates without a password.

Is a UK-used iPhone better than a Nigerian-used one?

Not automatically. What matters is battery health, original parts, iCloud status and a warranty, not where the phone was used.
