Home internet in Nigeria has changed. With 5G now live in many major cities, a 5G router and a data plan can replace fibre in many homes and offices, with no cable to dig and nothing to wait for. But choose the wrong router and you will be stuck with one network, weak Wi-Fi or a device that does not support 5G in your area at all.

Unlocked vs network-locked routers

Network-branded routers such as the MTN 5G router cost less, but they only accept that network's SIM. If MTN's signal is weak where you live, or you move house, you are stuck. An unlocked router such as the TP-Link NX200 takes any SIM: MTN, Airtel or Glo. You can switch to whichever network gives the best speed and data price at your address. Over a few years, that flexibility usually saves more than the price difference.

Do you actually have 5G coverage?

5G in Nigeria is concentrated in major cities such as Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, and is expanding. Before you buy:

1. Put a SIM in a 5G phone and check whether it shows 5G at the spot where the router will sit.
2. Run a speed test at different times of day.
3. Check your network's coverage map.

Every 5G router also works on 4G, so if 5G is patchy you still get a connection. If you are sure there is no 5G near you, save money with a 4G+ router.

4G categories explained

4G routers are rated by "Cat" (category). A higher category means a higher maximum speed:

• Cat4: up to 150Mbps, for example the TL-MR6400.
• Cat6: up to 300Mbps, for example the Archer MR600 and MR505.
• Cat11: up to 600Mbps, for example the M7650 MiFi.

Real speeds depend on your network and signal, but a higher category handles a busy cell tower better.

How to get faster speeds from any router

• Place it high and near a window facing the nearest mast. Signal through concrete walls drops sharply.
• Use external antennas if your router has antenna ports and the signal is weak.
• Plug in by cable for your PS5, smart TV or work desktop.
